The Rhode Island Institute for Labor Studies and Research has produced a video that you can have for free ($20 donation very much appreciated) on the topic of “Freedom at Work.”
This was part of a project funded by the RI Council on the Humanities. The video is 15 minutes of interviews with over 30 Rhode Island workers, union leaders, members, professors, teachers, etc. divided into 4 sections so that it can be be used for discussion, the segment topics are:
- What Does Freedom in the Workplace Mean?;
- Is there Freedom in the Workplace?;
- How can we get Freedom at Work?;
- Who is Responsible for Seeing that there is Freedom at Work?
To see the study/discussion guide, click here. We think that this will lead to interesting discussions with students or workers about their rights at work.
You can order the free video and study guide by responding by e-mail to rboudreau@rilaborinstitute.org with your address. Please put “Freedom at Work ” in the subject line.. Or you can write to Institute for Labor Studies,99 Bald Hill Rd.,Cranston,RI 02920, or call 401-463-9900.
“In a world where every thing seems to get dumbed down,the Freedom at Work video reminds us of a vibrant concern for the larger issues in life among ordinary working people.These speakers provide hope for the future through their earnest,sincere,and even passionate defense of the Bill of Rights.Push the pundits aside and listen to fif teen minutes of rank and file philosophy for a dose of optimism.”
— Scott Molloy,Labor History Professor,University of Rhode Island
"We had an opportunity to show the video during a short, three-day class, called "Know Your Job Rights". The class was made up of mostly middle-aged city bus drivers and public clerical workers. They found the video informative, with those least involved in their union learning the most...Thank you for keeping it short so that faculty will have an easier time working it into an already full curriculum"
-Karin Hart, Program Coordinator,Labor Studies, Laney College
"We found it a useful educating tool, especially for people new to the labor movement (and those union members who aren't aware of the rights issues vis-a-vis workers and corporations)
- Mary Zepernick, POCLAD (Program on Corporations, Law and Democracy)
"Freedom in the Workplace" has been shown on Connecticut at Work, Labor Beat in Chicago, and of course Rhode Island Labor Vision.
