Fundraising/ Special Events

The Institute for Labor Studies & Research hosts a variety of events throughout the year to generate funds to support the wide variety of programs and services that are offered to more than 3,000 working Rhode Islanders.

Edward J. McElroy Golf Tournament
In late summer, this annual event, which began in 1994, is held to raise scholarship funds to assist students who are financially unable to pay fully for the cost of attending one of our many programs. Scholarship funds are used to support tuition costs as well as other instructional costs for needy students. Registration materials for the golf tournament are available beginning in early June. Sponsorships are solicited simultaneously throughout the summer months. Click here for form (pdf).

Fall Harvest Wine Tasting
This event was inaugurated in the fall of 2007. The celebration serves as an opportunity to thank those many generous supporters who have made our work possible during the year, to cultivate new donors, and to raise initial funds to offset our general operating expenses and administrative costs. This event is by invitation only. Invitations are issued in late September for the event which is scheduled in late October – early November.

United Way/State Employees Charitable Appeal/Coordinated Federal Campaign
Beginning in the fall and continuing through the winter, the Institute engages in a series of fundraising activities in cooperation with various groups and agencies. As an organization listed in the United Way of Rhode Island directory (#3830), we seek the support of various worker/employee organizations during the annual UWRI campaign from September through November. The SECA and CFC are incorporated into this fundraising effort which supports our general operational and administrative costs.

Vision for the Future: Annual ILSR Appeal and Pledge Campaign
Our annual appeal and pledge campaign solicits individuals, union locals, councils, federations, and associations within the organized labor community. Between January and March, the Institute conducts this effort to support its programs and related administrative expenses.

Annual Awards Dinner
This event, which takes place in mid-May, is the highlight of our year. It provides the opportunity to showcase the graduates from our programs, and to present various awards to meritorious individuals. The Chuck Schwartz Memorial Scholarship is awarded to two students at the University of Rhode Island and at Rhode Island College who are enrolled in the Labor Studies programs. The Charles V. Schwartz Service Award is given periodically to an individual who has contributed exemplary service to the working people of Rhode Island. Corporate and organizational sponsorships at various levels combine with a program ad booklet to generate additional resources to support the Institute. Click here to see photos from the event.

LaborVision
The Institute for Labor Studies & Research produces a weekly television program which focuses on the issues and events that affect working Rhode Islanders. Through public access programming (RI Statewide Interconnect B Channel 14), every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday an edition of the program appears at 7:00, 8:00, and 5:00 pm, respectively. In late May and June, the major underwriters and sponsors, including Working RI, are contacted to renew their pledge to support programming costs. LaborVision is also commissioned for special projects by various organizations.
