Leadership for a Future (LFAF)
Leadership for a Future (LFAF) provides a leadership training environment for emerging and established leaders from community groups, labor unions and the religious community.
LFAF also provides an opportunity for leaders from diverse groups and backgrounds to forge relationships and networks that will benefit themselves and their organizations throughout their lives.
In addition to learning about Rhode Island’s history, culture, economics and politics, participants share their experiences and learn from the experiences of others in the group. This process creates a powerful, committed, and diverse network of graduates who have taken the time to understand one another. This network is critical and necessary for the shared goals of economic and social justice for all Rhode Islanders.
The program begins with a weekend retreat at Canonicus Camp followed by 8 Saturday sessions from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Throughout the program, participants examine the process and impact of social influence and leadership on the many issues facing Rhode Island’s communities. LFAF sessions focus on relationship building, institutional reflection, power analysis and initial studies of a variety of societal topics.
Individually, and as a group, the class implements a strategic analysis and planning process to address individual goals for working in community, religious and/or labor organizations.
Typical of LFAF sessions are:
- History of Communities and Labor in RI
- Grassroots and On-line Organizing
- Collaboration and Building Relationships
- Lobbying and Media Communications
- Public Speaking
- RI State Government
- An Overview of RI’s Economy and Politics
To become a participant in Leadership for a Future, individuals must have at least 3 to 5 years of active involvement in a community, labor or religious group; be staff, board officer, member, or active participant; commit to the weekend retreat; and attend a minimum of 6 of the 8 Saturday sessions
In addition, organizations must nominate participants; support the individual’s participation; and arrange to accommodate participants’ work schedules.
Registration for Leadership for a Future is $400.00. Scholarships, which pay half of the tuition cost ($200.00), are available by application to the Institute for Labor Studies.
