For Unions
The Institute for Labor Studies has always considered the education of union stewards and labor leaders to be its primary mission. In the Institute’s course catalogue, under the general heading edUnion, courses for union leaders and union membership are divided into five broad categories: computer training; contract training; leadership; labor relations and employment law; and workplace health and safety.
Under the broad heading of Leadership, for example, readers will find a menu of courses designed to broaden and enhance a labor leader’s knowledge understanding of a wide range of skills, such as: effective communication, grievance handling, lobbying, negotiation skills, organizing, and basic and advanced steward training.
The other categories, such as workplace health and safety or computer training, are self-explanatory regarding the content of the courses offered.
The Institute also offers Customized Training for Unions. A unique opportunity for union locals, the Institute will create and conduct trianing programs, specifically tailored to individual union locals, at a time and location convenient to the union local.
The Institute’s Workplace Adult Education Project (WAEP). In tody’s technological society, education is a “bread and butter” issue for unions. Labor plays a crucial role in promoting adult education classes at the workplace. For unions and their members, educational advancement means:
- Increased job security
- Promotion opportunities
- More effective communication
- More active union participation
- A better-informed union membership
- More individual self-confidence
Union officers and stewards are often most able to persuade workers to participate in adult education classes at work. Support and cousel from union leaders can encourage workers to stick with their classes and achieve their goals.
LaborVision has been on the air since 1986. It remains the only television show dedicated to covering issues that concern Rhode Island’ working families. The organized labor movement in Rhode Island is proud and fortunate to have LaborVision as a communications vehicle to bring labor’s and unions’ message to all Rhode Islanders through public access television programming.
