English-as-a-Second Language (ESL)
to increase the English proficiency of immigrant workers.
Adult Basic Education (ABE) to improve basic reading, writing, and mathematics skills.
High School Equivalency Preparation (GED) to prepare students to take the high school equivalency examination.
Customized Classes to address job-specific needs.
The three components of the Workplace Adult Education Project are business, unions, and the individual worker.
Business: In a rapidly-changing economy, employers need a workforce that is able to adapt to change. Today’s workers need the literacy skills to be able to:
- increase productivity
- reduce errors and accidents
- adapt to new methods
- communicate effectively
- understand instructions
- read personnel policies and safety manuals
- qualify for transfers and promotions
- understand technology
WAEP will work with your business to identify your literacy needs and to design instructional programs that will upgrade the reading, writing and communication skills of the workforce.
Unions: In today’s technological society, education is a “bread and butter” issue for unions. Labor plays a crucial role in promoting adult education classes at the workplace. For unions and their members, educational advancement means
- increased job security
- promotion opportunities
- more effective communication
- more active union participation
- a better-informed membership
- more self-confidence
Union officers and stewards are often most able to persuade workers to participate in adult education classes at work.
Support and counsel from union leaders can encourage students to stick with the classes and achieve their goals.
Individual Workers: Since 1987, WAEP has offered a second chance for many Rhode Island workers to:
- improve job skills
- obtain a high school degree
- learn English
- improve reading and writing skills
- build a brighter future
Workplace adult education offers employees the opportunity to pursue their education in the convenient and supportive environment of their workplace.
Instructors understand the many problems facing working students. At WAEP, our students are treated as adults.
